Something that is incredibly unique about Harrisonburg and the JMU community is the small town feel within a large university. Harrisonburg is known as a culinary district and is rich with unique eateries such as this adorable little french cafe.

Heritage Bakery & Cafe is located in the the Hardesty Higgins House in downtown Harrisonburg. Upon my arrival, I was greeted with a warm smile and the door and was immediately overcome with the incredible smell of home-made pastires.

When I say this place is incredible, I don't mean that lightly. They have a wide variety of options including breakfast, lunch, salads, pastries, drinks and desserts.

Not only was the mug my Almond Milk Hot Chocolate came in adorable, but the flavors were exquisite. The mixture of the frothy, chocolately base with the light and melted mini marshmellows on top was unlike any hot cocoa I have ever tasted.

I began with an open faced Sesame Bagel with Smoked Salmon, Cream Cheese, Red Onions, Capers, sprinkled lighty will Dill to top it off. I can honestly say this was my favorite item off of the menu. I am a stickler for smoked salmon, but this bagel was absolutely perfect. The combination of the flavorful red onion, the capers, and the sweet cream cheese was an explosion of flavor in my mouth. Well done, Heritage.

This Brocolli and Cheddar delight was their quiche of the day. I ordered it from the display case and they warmed it up to perfection. The cheddar base is topped with light and fluffy egg brocolli center, and the crust was cooked to perfection and complimented the very quiche well.

I personally am an avid chocolate conoussier. Take my word for it when I say order one of these puppies on your next trip to Heritage Bakery. This Chocolate Croissant was the perfect combination of a flaky outter crust with a soft, flavorful center.

As I was leaving, the woman at the register told me that she had a fresh batch of Orange Ricotta Sfogliatelle coming out of the oven. Although I can admit I had no idea what these were, I was not ready to let my incredible food journey with Heritage end. I definitely saved the best for last, because this Italian pastry was one of the best things I've ever eaten. The outter shell was candied and the center consisted of an orange, cake like filling. Delicious.

Overall, I would say that my dining experience at Heritage was a definite 5 stars. There are options for everyone on the menu, including vegetarian, dairy-free, gluten-free, and a kids menu. The price is extremely affordable for the quality of dining experience and cuisine. You are missing out if you haven't taken a visit yet.
